Designing motivation
for people who learn online.
The Educational Technology Lab (Kato Lab) is a research group led by Professor Yasuhisa Kato. Grounded in educational technology, we apply generative AI and large language models (LLMs), learning analytics, and learning management systems to online higher education. Using Tokyo Online University, a fully online institution, as our research field, we study the design, implementation, and evaluation of generative-AI-supported learning, privacy-preserving analysis of learning data, and the responsible use of AI in educational institutions.

Treating “keeping at it” as a design problem
In an online university, learners decide when and where to study. Whether they keep going is therefore not a matter of willpower but of how materials, systems, and support are designed. Using Tokyo Online University — a fully online institution — as our field, we run longitudinal cohort studies that combine learning-history data with learner surveys.
Our starting point is always whether a finding can be returned to practice. Rather than stopping at theory testing, we aim to deliver results in forms instructors can actually use — checklists, design frameworks, and course templates.

For students considering this seminar
We start by stepping outside your own way of learning and examining it as an object of research. Topics are not limited to education: any situation where people keep at something — or fail to — is fair game.
